UVSteriDevice: Ultraviolet-C Sterilization device

This is a mobile automated ultraviolet C (UV-C) light emitting disinfection unit designed to kill
pathogens associated with infectious diseases. It works primarily through the use of
germicide lamps/bulbs that produce high-intensity UV-C light, a form of electromagnetic
radiation (100–350nm). UV-C is germicidal; it destroys the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and
other microorganisms, preventing them from multiplying, repairing the damaged DNA,
and causing infections and disease. UV light dimerizes nucleic acids molecules, especially
the thymine, which creates dimers and replication or repair is stopped. The device has 5
UV-C bulbs vertically arranged and mounted on a base which contains the control panel
and circuitry. All this is mount on rollers which make the device mobile. It makes use of
240V from the mains that is later input into the transformer and later distributes to the
entire circuit. Our subsequent designs will focus on us use of battery backup or solar and
also having a closed system UV sterilization chamber. It can be used to disinfect surfaces,
medical equipment, devices and PPEs within healthcare facilities and it is not intended to
replace other hospital cleaning practices, but rather to be used as a complementary
method to enhance disinfection after surfaces are manually cleaned and disinfected. This
will improve patient safety in hospitals and also reduce in the spread on hospital acquired
infections. Since its mobile, the device can be moved to different stations in the hospital
and assist is reducing the spread of nosocomial infections.
