Poster Presentationn “Translation of the LeVe CPAP System to Uganda for Local Production, Maintenance, and Clinical Use” at the 3rd International Congress in Innovations for Global Surgery
The 3rd International Congress in Innovations for Global Surgery was held from May 5–7, 2024, in Cape Town, South Africa. The conference, themed “Value-based Innovation in Global Surgery,” aimed to address the lack of access to safe and timely surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where approximately 5 billion people are affected. The event brought together a diverse audience of healthcare professionals, engineers, and students to explore innovative, cost-effective solutions that improve surgical outcomes in underserved regions.
Organized by Innovations in Global Surgery in collaboration with the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, and the International Association of Students Surgical Societies (IASSS), the congress featured sessions on improving surgical care access, quality, infrastructure, and systems thinking. A pre-conference workshop titled “Biomedical Innovation Idea to Product” equipped participants with practical skills in identifying healthcare needs, brainstorming solutions, and prototyping innovative medical devices. Team activities, such as designing and repurposing existing technologies, emphasized creative and collaborative approaches.
Prof Pete Culmer, Dr. Robert Ssekitoleko, and their team highlight the development and local production of the LeVe CPAP system. This collaboration between University of Leeds and Makerere University aims to provide a low-cost, locally manufactured respiratory support device to address the needs of patients in Uganda, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic.
