MATICA – A local Mathematical Teaching tool for students and Pupils
We have designed a mathematics card game (Matica) that allows learners to have fun
with mathematics and socially interact with their teachers, parents and peers as they play.
It is designed as an unconventional mathematical social learning tool for learners to
improve on their basic numeracy skills and interest in mathematics through social
interaction and play. Matica is a deck of 46 cards with 36 cards labelled with numbers 1 to
9 each assigned one of the mathematical arithmetic symbols +, -, ÷, x; and pairs of special
cards of addition, subtraction, square, square-root signs and two mockers assigned a
number zero. The game is designed from 280gsm paper, cut in rectangular shapes to
form a 56*88mm deck of 46 cards. The game requires at least two players to think, keep
track of changing numbers, memorize mathematical information, make split-second(s)
decisions and yet is simple enough to remain interesting, and support healthy competition
and mental work in a sub-conscious manner.
It will not only drive to better performance in STEM subjects but also improves general
intelligence required for solving everyday challenges. Our solution agrees with many
social scientists that have also reported that playing games helps children get along with
others and it’s a great mind stimulating tool. They have all proved that changing teaching
models to being very interactive and engaging is a very effective tool in schools handling
children who may not have love for sciences and mathematics, victims of wars, orphans,
and other traumatic events.
