Gastro Bag DEVICE
The Gastro-Bag is a low-cost surgical device designed to reduce the high mortality rates of gastroschisis, a condition where abdominal organs protrude near the umbilical cord, with 75%-96% mortality in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) compared to under 4% in high-income nations. Developed in collaboration with Duke University and Makerere University, it uses locally available materials in Uganda, including a urine collection bag and female condom ring. The device is made from bio compatible, flexible, and durable Medical Standard Polyvinyl (PVC)sheets, offering a sustainable solution for Sub-Saharan Africa that prioritizes local manufacturing over foreign aid.Local manufacturing and clinical trials are underway.
