EPED Strip (Early Preeclampsia Detection Strip)
This project is developing a urine-based point-of-care diagnostic test designed for
pregnant women to self-screen for preeclampsia at home. The test detects specific
biomarkers in urine that indicate the early onset of preeclampsia, a condition that can
lead to severe complications like eclampsia if left undiagnosed. By enabling women to
identify the condition early, the test encourages timely medical intervention before
symptoms become life-threatening for both the mother and her unborn child.
The diagnostic tool uses lateral flow immunoassay technology to detect elevated levels of
these biomarkers, offering a safe, affordable, and reliable screening method. The primary
goal is to provide a simple home-based test, especially for women with limited access to
prenatal care, so they can know when to seek medical attention. The test acts as an early
warning system, helping prevent the progression of preeclampsia to dangerous stages.
In addition, the test can be used by healthcare providers during routine prenatal visits as
a more specific screening tool for preeclampsia, complementing traditional blood
pressure measurements. The combination of the urine biomarker test with blood pressure
readings will enhance the accuracy of diagnosis, ensuring better outcomes for both the
mother and her baby.
