Rapid Diagnosis of Bacterial Meningitis in Neonates
Lumenda is an accurate and rapid method of diagnosing bacterial meningitisin neonates in LMICs, facilitating rapid intervention and avoiding wasteful prophylactic administration of antibiotics by analyzing the optical properties of the CSF to rapidly detect bacterial meningitis at each point along this pathophysiology. This device interrogates the two biomarkers in CSF since they are diagnostic metrics of bacterial meningitis with high specificity.Specifically, this device uses spectrophotometry to relate optical absorbance to protein and WBC concentration. Together these two metrics, measured by Lumenda, provide vital information to allow physicians to makeinformed diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in suspected neonates. This is a collaboration project between University of British Columbia and Makerere Univeristy.
